In 1988 the movie "Coming To America" was about an
African prince from the fictional nation of Zamunda, traveling to
America to find a bride. The movie was a big hit and is now a cult
classic.
The film was subject of a copyright infringement
lawsuit, as the movie was stolen from a 50-page story submitted to
Paramount Pictures by the legendary columnist, Art Buchwald. "Coming
To America" actor Eddie Murphy was fraudulently credited with
Buchwald's work.
Paramount lied in court stating the movie made no
money. Then it was discovered the film made over $300,000,000.
Paramount then settled the case with Buchwald.

"Coming 2 America" was released this month and it is
a substandard version of the original. "Coming To America" was a
great film that was well done (though I would have left out the
royal bathing scene in the original and sequel, as some kids have
watched the films).
The sequel leaves much to be desired. While the
original cast did a good job in the sequel and Tracy Morgan was a
funny addition to the film, much of the new actors and actresses
seemed out of place in the movie. The sequel centers on Prince Akeem
returning to America when he discovers he had knocked up a woman in
New York, who gave birth to a son, who is now 30 and the heir.
The script was week and unfunny, the sets looked
fake, the casting was poor, the costumes were not authentic looking
and the artwork bad. The house used as the Zamundan palace didn't
even look African nor did the famous dance sequence brought back
from the original.

Even the soundtrack was poor. They remade the 1988
hit song "Coming To America" by the System, which was a solid hit.
However, the 2021 remake just wasn't as good. The film has received
many bad reviews from critics and audiences alike, who know the
original.
The film was sold to Amazon for $125,000,000 as
opposed to being released in a movie theater, due to the coronavirus
pandemic. It's just as well, as the film would have suffered less
than stellar box office sales.
I'm disappointed with the project. I was hoping for
more from this film. However, the current breed of Hollywood
so-called creative talent are anything but. Hollywood used to make great movies, before it was
taken over by a deranged cult with no talent. |
